Gobi Desert (Mongolia)

The Gobi Desert is a vast desert region between northern China and southern Mongolia. It covers about one third of the surface of Mongolia.

The Gobi desert is composed of interconnected desert and semi-desert landscapes and the majority of it is a rocky desert. There are two sub-deserts, Beishan (in the east) and Alashan (in the south-west).

However, the desert has a lot to offer; not only in its landscape, but also in history: the desert is a place where many fossils have been found. Above all, the variety of suarian fossils and nests is exceptional! The most famous site is called "Flaming cliffs". Although you can no longer admire the finds at their original sites, it is possible to do so in the natural history museum in the Mongolian capital Ulan Bator.

Hop on the Transmongolian Railway and traivel the desert! By the way, this is a great opportunity to combine a trip to Ulan Bator with a desert sightseeing tour.
