How to reach Greece without taking a plane

In Greece, off the main Alexandropolis-Thessaloniki-Athens (or Kiato) railway line, there are lovely corners to discover by train:
The Odontotos rack railroad is a construction wonder. The narrow-gauge railway line is situated on the Peloponnese peninsula; departing from Diakopto, it heads to Kalavrita.
The secondary line branches off towards Kalambaka. From there, you can take a side trip to the Meteora, the "floating monasteries". The Meteora reside on conglomerate rocks and used to be very difficult to reach.

The branch line Larissa - Volos brings you quickly to the sea (picture 3 station Volos). On the 1st floor there is the Thessaly Railway Museum, look for the keeper, he will open it for you!

London/Paris-Igoumenítsa/Patras

Generally there are 2 possibilities to travel to Greece close to the ground:

The most reasonable tripstarts with the Eurostar to Paris and from here directly to Turin (5 1/2 hours). Sleep here and explore the city and at 9 o'clock the direct train goes to Bari (8 hrs.)
You still catch the ferry to Greece and arrive after 9 hours of travelling overnight at 6 o'clock in Igoumenitsa (or at 1 o'clock in Patras-> does not go every day).

From Igoumenitsa buses go to Athens or Thessaloniki.

Seat (Bari-Igoumenitsa)

From AUSTRIA OR GERMANY there are daily night trains to Bologna (from Vienna/Munich). Arrival is at half past five and the journey continues with direct IC trains to Bari. From here it goes overnight to Greece.

Price p.p. (returm / TOTAL, incl. commission): from Vienna/Munich to Igoumenitsa/Patras approx. 370€.
