Traivelling to Japan

Consisting of 6,852 islands, Japan is an island country. Etymologically, the kanji (Chinese characters) that make up the name Japan mean "country of origin of the Sun". Thus Japan is referred to as the "land of the rising sun".

Traveling from Vienna to Japan by train, you can? Here is our answer: Yes! The route will be as follows: Vienna - Kiev - Moscow - Nur-Sultan ( formerly Astana) - China - Japan. As an alternative, you can also travel directly from Vienna to Moscow once every week.
The benefit of the two-week train trip is that true to the motto "the journey is the destination", along the way you can already admire a great number of sights and make wonderful travel memories.

In Moscow you will have one day to visit the city. The following two-and-a-half-day trip will take you to the Kazakh capital Nur-Sultan, which was called Astana until 2019. Here, you can also go on a few sightseeing tours. From Nur-Sultan, it's just a hop, skip and a jump to Almaty, which is also in Kazakhstan, by overnight train. Bridge a full day and night here by stopping at the Central-State Museum and hiking through the foothills of the Trans-Ili Alatau mountain. The next day, you'll travel along the Silk Road on a 24-hour journey through the Gobi Desert and eventually cross the Chinese border, changing trains in Urumchi. The following train crosses the Middle Kingdom and takes you to Shanghai within 40 hours- be sure to spend a short time here in order to visit sights such as the Yuyuan Garden + the Old Town or some of Shanghai's famous museums.

Our route changes from land to sea: By ferry you will travel from Shanghai to Japan within only two days. From the port of Japan you will be able to reach Kyoto or Tokyo in just a few hours.

At present, the price for the train to Shanghai is about 670 € p.p. one way, for the ferry about 170 € one way. Price excludes agency fee (see traivelling.com/agbs).

An absolute must for anyone traveling to Tokyo is to cross the Shibuya intersection, which is located right in front of JR Shibuya station in Shibuya district and is world famous for its crowds of people crossing the intersection every time the traffic lights change. At peak times, up to 15,000 people cross the intersection per green phase.

Did you know that...
the Tokyo underground is the busiest underground network in the world, with about 3.1 billion passengers a year? The 13 lines of the Tokyo underground are used by an average of 8.5 million passengers every day!
